this painting was done plein air from the grounds of olana; frederic church’ estate above the hudson opposite the catskills. i was there with my friend and fellow artist esmond lyons on an art day out. i don’t often paint plein air, but when i do i invariably enjoy it and generally enjoy good results. in this painting i used a fairly high impasto in the foreground to contrast with the flatness of the sky. i used my familiar pallet for the foreground as well again contrasting the more hudson shcool pallet of the background
the foreground and background blend very well. This one is so calm and peaceful.
